For many, at least one "Chaat" item would be included among their most liked Indian dishes. Indian cuisine is almost incomplete without these mouth watering road side stall items. It is one of the most happening and crowded place in India. It is the favourite hang out spot of the young where they can savour and enjoy. For those of you who are unfamiliar, chaat is a savoury sweet snack offered at roard side stalls or food truck and carts in India including Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is said that it originated in Uttar Pradesh and now it is become very popular throughout the country.
Today's recipe is from the streets of Bombay - "Bhelpuri". It has the perfect balance of spice, sour, and salt taste. Alos, every region has its own variation of the snack, Jhal muri in Calcutta, Kara Pori in South etc...
Bhel Puri
A mix of puffed rice, onions and tomatoes, topped with crispy roasted peanuts and sev in a sour and sweet chutney mix.
Prep Time: 10 Mins | Cook Time: Nil | Total Time: 10 Mins | Serves: 2-3
Ingredients
- 2 Cups Puffed Rice | Pori
- 1 Medium sized Potato boiled and mashed
- 2 Medium sized Onion, finely chopped, divided
- 1-2 Medium sized finely chopped Tomatoes
- 2 Green chillies finely chopped
- 1 Tbsp Mint coriander chutney
- 1 Tbsp Dates Tamarind chutney
- A bunch of coriander leaves, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp Roasted cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp Red Chilli powder
- 1/2 tsp Chaat Masala
- A pinch of black salt
- 1/2 Cup roasted unsalted peanuts
- For topping
- 1/2 Cup sev
- Lime wedges
Mix of onion-green chilli-coriander.
Instructions
Slightly roast the puffed rice until it is warm and crisp.
Mix some chopped onion and green chillies and coriander leaves. Keep it in a side.
Mix all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl (except sev ) Check for seasoning and adjust.
Just before serving, add sev and some of the onion-green chilli-coriander mix and lime wedges on side.
Notes
The chutneys can be made at home or store bought as per one's convenience. Also adjust the quantity of these chutney as per your preference.
