%20cookie%20recipes%20lately,%20looking%20for%20a%20great%20holiday%20cookie%20to%20make%20for%20The%20Great%20Food%20Blogger%20Cookie%20Swap%202012%20(stay%20tuned).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20decided%20these%20apple%20spice%20drop%20cookies%20didn't%20quite%20fit%20the%20bill%20as%20a%20holiday%20cookie,%20but%20that%20doesn't%20mean%20that%20they%20aren't%20excellent.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERegular%20readers%20know%20that,%20while%20I%20do%20quite%20a%20bit%20of%20baking%20and%20regularly%20share%20cookie%20and%20cake%20recipes,%20I%20prefer%20my%20sweets%20a%20little%20less%20on%20the%20sweet%20side.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI've%20always%20been%20this%20way.%20(My%20sister%20used%20to%20love%20sitting%20next%20to%20me%20at%20birthday%20parties%20because%20I%20only%20ate%20the%20cake%20part%20of%20my%20slice%20and%20gave%20the%20frosting%20to%20her.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20also%20how%20I%20can%20get%20away%20with%20eating%20cookies%20for%20breakfast.%20Booyah.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20honestly,%20these%20cookies%20are%20perfect%20with%20coffee%20or%20tea,%20either%20for%20breakfast%20or%20an%20afternoon%20snack.%20If%20you%20like%20hermit%20cookies%20or%20fruit%20breads,%20you%20will%20completely%20dig%20these%20cookies.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20secret%20ingredient%20(OK,%20not%20so%20secret%20now,%20I%20guess)%20is%20coffee.%20Yep,%20cold%20brewed%20coffee.%20Sounds%20weird,%20I%20know,%20but%20there's%20something%20about%20the%20coffee%20that%20brings%20out%20the%20flavor%20of%20the%20spices.%20(I'm%20sure%20there%20is%20food%20science%20to%20explain%20this%20but%20I%20don't%20know%20what%20it%20is.%20If%20you%20do,%20please%20enlighten%20all%20of%20us%20in%20the%20comments%20section.)%20Feel%20free%20to%20add%20a%20handful%20of%20walnuts%20to%20the%20batter%20before%20baking.%20I'm%20not%20a%20fan%20of%20nuts%20in%20my%20cookies,%20so%20I%20simply%20omitted%20them.%20And%20I'm%20sure%20that%20substituting%20different%20kinds%20of%20dried%20fruit,%20not%20just%20raisins,%20would%20be%20an%20interesting%20twist%20as%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20another%20vintage%20Shaker%20recipe%20that%20I%20adapted%20from%20The%20Best%20of%20Shaker%20Cooking.%20I%20love%20vintage%20recipes.%20I%20don't%20have%20a%20lot%20of%20handed-down%20family%20recipes,%20so%20vintage%20recipes%20are%20the%20next%20best%20thing.%20It%20warms%20my%20heart%20to%20know%20I'm%20making%20something%20that%20many%20other%20New%20England%20women%20have%20made%20before%20me%20in%20centuries%20past.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20that%20it%20still%20tastes%20just%20as%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApple%20Spice%20Drop%20Cookies%20(adapted%20from%20a%20Hancock%20Shaker%20Village%20recipe%20from%20The%20Best%20of%20Shaker%20Cooking)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20saucepan,%20cook%20the%20apple,%20coffee,%20sugar,%20butter,%20raisins%20and%20spices%20over%20low%20heat%20until%20the%20fruit%20is%20tender%20(about%208-9%20minutes).%20Remove%20from%20the%20heat%20and%20cool.%20Once%20cooled,%20stir%20in%20the%20vanilla.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20bowl,%20combine%20the%20flour,%20baking%20soda%20and%20salt.%20Add%20the%20fruit%20mixture%20and%20stir%20until%20combined.%20Drop%20the%20batter%20by%20heaping%20teaspoonful%20onto%20prepared%20baking%20sheets%20(you%20can%20put%20them%20fairly%20close%20together,%20as%20the%20cookies%20don't%20spread%20very%20much).%20Bake%20for%2010-12%20minutes.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
