Рецепт All Blue Birthday Party (Kitty Litter Cake)
I mentioned before that we were throwing a birthday party.
I think that this was the first themed birthday party I’ve thrown. I can see why people get obsessed with them. It was fun to come up with menu items, I was laughing pretty hard as I put some of the dishes together, and the crowd seemed to enjoy their night here at the farm.
I’ll be posting all the recipes on the blog in the coming two weeks but for now here’s a wrap up of the party and the recipe for one disgustingly good cake. It is a cake that might be better suited for your Halloween party than for a birthday party.
This is Blue, the birthday girl. The party’s theme, of course, was BLUE. The party was for the people, I guess, although some dogs did show up. We made up her birthday date because she was a shelter pup but it is safe to say that she’s 10 years old now, give or take a few days.
It was a late evening party and a campfire was in the plans so marshmallows were a must. Marshmallows seem like an intimidating thing to make but really, if you have a stand mixer, they come together with little effort. You can customize both colors and flavors by making them homemade and I promise you will be blown away by the taste difference between these guys and homemade. The blue jelly bean popcorn was blogged here and was a fun snack to pop in your mouth on your way past the food table.
Another ingredient that just seems natural, although out of season this time of year, at a blue birthday party is blueberries. So blueberry pie was had. Does the pie say 10 or 70? It is all the same in dog years!
Chocolate chip cookies are always a hit so I took our favorite recipe and simply died the dough blue.
Someone asked if the party was a surprise party. I guess it kind of was since Blue doesn’t speak fluent English (she does speak a little, but like most people learning a foreign language, she understands more than she can speak). We had a bow on her neck to acknowledge her honor but unfortunately her little (or big? We’re not sure how old her sibling is since Flo was adopted as an adult) sister showed her up.
Yes, a couple of people mistook my dog Flo for the birthday girl since she so wonderfully wore a blue tshirt and hat for quite awhile.
It wasn’t all sweets at the party, though.
We had bleu cheese burgers and various blue chips and dips (salsa, guac). We also ran into these awesome blue potatoes on a last minute rush to the grocery store. We roasted these up for a wonderful snack of popping in your mouth.
Dried garlic and rosemary, some salt, and the perfect amount of time roasting in the oven took this snack over the top.
Another treat that was over the top was Blue’s birthday cake. Although she couldn’t eat it (it was for the people, after all), it resembled what might be her favorite forbidden treat of all time: kitty litter.
I had seen pictures of this recipe in the past all over the internet and never really had a recipe to make the cake, but I definitely had the desire to (hello awesome shock factor!). Many people didn’t get the courage up to eat the cake but those that did were not disappointed!
Kitty Litter Cake (adapted from All Recipes)
Ingredients
2 9×13 cakes (use your favorite recipes or two boxes of cake mix prepared as the package suggests), crumbled
- I made one vanilla and one chocolate
- 2 packages instant vanilla pudding (7 ounces total)
- 2 sleeves graham crackers (about 20 sheets of graham crackers total)
tootsie rolls
green food dye
1 new kitty litter box
Instructions
Prepare pudding according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble.
Crumble graham crackers in small batches in a food processor, scraping often, or put them in a heavy duty ziplock bag and mash with a rolling pin.
Set aside all but 1/4 cup of the graham crumbs. To the 1/4 cup add a few drops of green food coloring and mix. Set aside for later.
Toss cake crumbs with the chilled pudding. You probably won’t need all of the pudding, you want the cake to be just moist, not soggy.
Put cake mixture into the litter box. Top with enough graham cracker crumbs to cover cake so that it resembles litter.
Put about 6 unwrapped tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until softened, about 20 seconds. Shape the ends so that they are no longer blunt, and curve the tootsie rolls slightly. Roll in graham cracker crumbs.
Strategically place tootsie rolls in the box and add piles of green dyed graham crumbs as well.
Revel in the grossness.
