One thing that struck me during this year’s visit was how certain food trends in the U.S. are just a part of life here. You think savory yogurt is big right now? .%20%20You%20won%E2%80%99t%20find%20it%20combined%20with%20sugary%20fruits%20like%20we%20tend%20to%20eat%20yogurt%20in%20the%20U.S.%20%20The%20photo%20below%20is%20the%20lebneh%20with%20olives%20that%20was%20served%20at%20a%20breakfast%20buffet%20at%20our%20hotel%20Dar%20Alma%20in%20the%20ancient%20southern%20city%20Tyre.%20%20You%E2%80%99ll%20also%20find%20yogurt%20as%20an%20ingredient%20in%20many%20main%20dishes%20in%20Lebanon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPICKLED%20VEGETABLES%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPickling%20and%20fermentation%20are%20high%20on%20the%20list%20of%202015%20U.S.%20food%20trends,%20and%20finally%20people%20are%20beginning%20to%20realize%20that%20%E2%80%9Cpickles%E2%80%9D%20can%20be%20made%20with%20a%20lot%20more%20vegetables%20than%20the%20classic%20cucumber.%20These%20bright%20pink%20pickled%20turnips%20(colored%20by%20beet%20juice)%20have%20been%20on%20trend%20in%20Lebanon%20for%20hundreds%20of%20years.%20%20A%20table%20filled%20with%20mezze%20isn%E2%80%99t%20complete%20without%20a%20plate%20of%20%20pickled%20turnips,%20known%20as%20lift.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPLANT-BASED%20MEALS%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20the%20U.S.%20is%20now%20fascinated%20by%20plant-based%20meals,%20and%20legumes%20are%20getting%20lots%20of%20love%20(except%20for%20strict%20Paleo%20followers),%20Lebanon%20has%20long%20enjoyed%20falafel%20%E2%80%94%20perhaps%20the%20world%E2%80%99s%20first%20veggie%20burger%20made%20with%20ground%20chickpeas.%20%20I%20just%20can%E2%80%99t%20get%20enough%20falafel%20here!%20Here%E2%80%99s%20a%20falafel%20sandwich%20I%20enjoyed%20this%20week%20in%20Byblos%20(with%20pickled%20turnips,%20parsley%20and%20tahini%20sauce),%20along%20with%20a%20video%20I%20took%20of%20falafel%20being%20fried%20in%20the%20old%20souks%20in%20the%20southern%20city%20of%20Saida.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECAULIFLOWER%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20know%20cauliflower%20is%20enjoying%20its%20day%20in%20the%20sun%20in%20the%20U.S.%20%E2%80%94%20taking%20over%20some%20of%20the%20spotlight%20from%20kale.%20%20They%E2%80%99ve%20always%20eaten%20a%20lot%20of%20cauliflower%20here%20in%20Lebanon.%20Here%E2%80%99s%20a%20dish%20of%20fried%20cauliflower%20we%20had%20in%20Saida,%20along%20with%20sliced%20eggplant.%20%20Both%20were%20eaten%20with%20a%20squeeze%20of%20lemon%20or%20tahini%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENUTS%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%E2%80%99ve%20only%20recently%20gotten%20over%20our%20fear%20of%20fat%20in%20the%20U.S.%20and%20nuts%20are%20experiencing%20a%20renaissance%20of%20sorts.%20%20The%20Lebanese%20have%20never%20feared%20nuts,%20which%20are%20a%20classic%20snack%20with%20a%20drink%20%E2%80%94%20along%20with%20carrots%20doused%20in%20lemon%20juice.%20%20Fresh%20almonds,%20or%20loz,%20are%20especially%20popular.%20%20Here%E2%80%99s%20a%20bowl%20we%20were%20served%20at%20dinner%20in%20Tyre,%20with%20a%20bright%20red%20nut%20cracker.%20%20Pictured%20below%20is%20a%20bowl%20of%20the%20fresh%20almonds%20with%20the%20puffy%20green%20shell%20removed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFRUIT%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20are%20chronically%20low%20consumers%20of%20fruit%20in%20the%20U.S.,%20although%20that%E2%80%99s%20beginning%20to%20change%20and%20fruit%20in%20all%20its%20forms%20are%20trending%20up%20back%20home.%20%20Here%20in%20Lebanon,%20fruit%20is%20practically%20worshipped.%20%20The%20picture%20below%20is%20all%20the%20fruit%20grown%20in%20my%20father-in-law%E2%80%99s%20yard%20%E2%80%94%20grapes,%20figs,%20passion%20fruit%20and%20pomegranates.%20%20Most%20meals%20end%20with%20fruit%20%E2%80%94%20often%20watermelon,%20as%20pictured%20below%20from%20our%20dinner%20in%20Beit%20Mery.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMINI%20DESSERTS%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh,%20and%20foraging%E2%80%A6a%20hot,%20hot%20trend%20in%20the%20U.S.,%20that%E2%80%99s%20a%20way%20of%20life%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20especially%20love%20that.%20%20We%20pick%20our%20own%20wild%20herbs%20from%20the%20yard,%20dry%20the%20sumac%20from%20the%20bushes%20and%20pluck%20fresh%20figs,%20grapes%20and%20cactus%20fruit%20from%20the%20trees.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
