Рецепт A Cut Worth Making...??
by Amber Massey

Last week as I was perusing the produce section of my grocery- attempting to stay away from the strategically placed 'seasonal' produce (the candied and caramel apples)-my wondering eyes caught something I've never seen or heard of. The 'Produce Man' was standing there organizing the Roma tomatoes when I startled him with "What the heck is a 'SlimCado?" The sticker on the SlimCado claims that this oversized fruit has 50% less fat and 35% fewer calories than the regular ones. How how does that work? Produce Man proceeded to explan that these aren't of the typical California varieties, but that they come from Florida. Did I mention they are just about twice the size of the Hass? I thought those bad boys were pretty big. The nice PM pulled out his knife and cut me open one for tasting- Hmm..tastes like an avocado- sort of. Pretty sure it was missing something- How about that buttery, melt in your mouth, almost applewood smoked bacon-y taste? That would be the fat. You could totally tell it was missing the fat. The most well known (and succulent fact) about the avocado is its richness in Omega-3 fatty acids- that is, the good fat. But this avocado..is, well- on a diet? After my sample of this SlimCado I decided to pick one up anyway- even though I still had the mediocre taste in my mouth. (Nothing a few purple grapes couldn't take care of, though. Yes, I am self-admittedly one of those people.) I took it home, and Googled my new found fruit. I came to find out that this isn't a new thing, but just new to me (and maybe you, too). The SlimCado contains less oil and more water than the rough-skinned California varieties. Well there you go- this avocado is simply just watered down! I decided to taste test--and calorie test-- both varieties. Something easy. Guacamole. Delicious.

Simply Guacamole

In a medium sized bowl, rough mash the avocado. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until combine.

After tasting both versions, and testing them out on my Fireman, too, we both concurred that the original Hass guacamole was the best. The SlimCado was missing (still) that nutty, sweet flavor the regular varieties boast so well. As you can see- the calorie/fat difference isn't that significant either. What you are losing in fat, you are also losing in flavor. I've decided that if I'm gonna eat an avocado, it will be with ALLLLL the fat :) But, you are open to be the judge. I would love to hear about it!
