Is anything better than how Grandma made it?

Claudia lamascolo
Claudia lamascolo 06 февраля 2011

How many Regions in the World, Traditions, Techiniques and most of all family handed down recipes we grew up with and continue on through generation to generation. What's authentic? Its a culture of your soul, your family, love for food... bring it to us here in this group...mom use to say, this is how grandma made it, I have spent more than 30 years trying to recreate her taste, close but no cigar... a taste etched in my brain forever.....

Re: Is anything better than how Grandma made it?

I wish I had some recipes from my nanny and my mom. It's sad but my family just won't eat the types of food I grew up with. So now I am starting my own recipe traditions for my kids.

Well someone has to start them somewhere, you are the next generation thats awesome, so your tradition may be etched in a blog for the next generation of cooks, thats what this is all about.. I know how you feel there are some recipes I will never have but I can still taste in my head..but I am the only one that would love them...

Re: Is anything better than how Grandma made it?

I love this group although I have no memories of my grandmothers. One died before I was born and the other shortly after. I wish I had the memories.

I had one grandfather and he was the best but he did not cook.

I will follow along. Thanks for the invite.

Thks for the invite, Claudia! I've added my Heavenly Pork Leg Vermicelli to your group which is a hand-me-down recipe, with memories of my late Grandma.

This is a popular dish in Singapore & hope it'll gain popularity in other countries soon. Looking fwd to sharing!

Re: Is anything better than how Grandma made it?

My fathers mother was an excellent baker, but I didn't realize until after she passed away that much of her cooking was pretty basic (not all of it, mind you!).

There are still some pastries that I really miss. Some relatives have the recipes but they aren't the same. When i finally get my hands on the recipes I hope that a couple of baking friends will help me.

No, there is nothing better! I have spent the past 20 years of my life learning how to cook like my Italian grandma and I am gaining new respect and love for her with every passing year. I have found out the real secret was all the LOVE she poured into her cooking. I understand this now and it really does make everything taste much better! :-) Anthony

Re: Is anything better than how Grandma made it?

Thanks for the invite! What's funny is that on my mother's side my gram never cooked. If her microwave takes a turn for the worse, it's all over! She is full blooded Italian too! lol On my father's side my gram cooked wonderful dishes. Unf. I never got the pleasure of getting any of those recipes. I remember every Sunday a nice big Italian meal. She made ravioli's the size of your plate! My mother has been a grandma for 8 yrs. now and I will def. share some of her great recipes :)

Re: Is anything better than how Grandma made it?

LOL! My poor grandma was Scottish, so MOST things were better than how she made it!! She did make two wonderful things that made up for all the over cooked, boiled meals. One was her fish and chips, perfect every time. I haven't made them, but my mom does. The other were her RAISIN CAKES. She got alzheimer's before I got the recipe, so I recreated it. It is still the favorite dessert in our family. It always reminds me of her, even if it isn't the exact same recipe.
