,%20and%20her%20emotions%20throughout%20the%20book%20flow%20into%20her%20cooking%20and%20cause%20strange%20things%20to%20happen.%20Esquivel's%20book%20was%20the%20first%20that%20I%20know%20of%20that%20sprinkled%20recipes%20throughout%20the%20text,%20much%20as%20other%20novels%20have%20traditionally%20headed%20chapters%20with%20quotes%20from%20poems%20or%20other%20literary%20sources.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20were%20many%20cool%20recipes%20for%20dishes%20and%20home%20remedies%20in%20the%20book%20that%20could%20have%20inspired%20me%20to%20cook%20and%20blog%20them%20up.%20I%20considered%20the%20sensuality%20of%20Quail%20in%20Rose%20Petal%20Sauce%20and%20the%20Mexican%20holiday%20classic%20of%20Three%20King's%20Bread.%20The%20thought%20of%20making%20my%20own%20matches,%20however,%20seemed%20unwise%20(and%20where%20does%20one%20purchase%20minium%20and%20powdered%20potassium%20nitrate,%20anyway?)%20I%20found%20a%20blogging%20duo%20who%20actually%20cooked%20up%20a%20whole%20feast%20from%20the%20book%20(actually%20the%20movie%20version%20of%20Esquivel's%20book)%20and%20that%20seemed%20pretty%20intriguing,%20but%20ultimately%20I%20settled%20on%20making%20a%20treat%20of%20cookies%20and%20hot%20chocolate%20for%20my%20family%20on%20a%20blustery%20weekend%20afternoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20followed%20my%20usual%20scratch%20recipe%20for%20hot%20chocolate%20from%20the%20back%20of%20the%20cocoa%20powder%20container%20(cocoa,%20dash%20of%20salt,%20warm%20milk%20and%20a%20bit%20of%20vanilla),%20spiced%20up%20with%20a%20hint%20of%20cinnamon.%20For%20accompaniment,%20I%20hit%20a%20bunch%20of%20cookbooks%20for%20Mexican%20baking%20recipes%20and%20chose%20to%20make%20a%20gluten-free%20version%20of%20Polvorones%20de%20Canela%20(Cinnamon%20Cookies)%20from%20The%20Moosewood%20Collective's%20cookbook%20%22Sundays%20at%20the%20Moosewood%20Restaurant%22.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20've%20seen%20recipes%20for%20similar%20butter%20cookies%20rolled%20in%20powdered%20sugar%20called%20Mexican%20Wedding%20Cookies%20or%20Mexican%20Shortbread%20(add%20nuts).%20Other%20cooks%20from%20other%20countries%20also%20make%20cookie%20cousins%20to%20these%20little%20gems:%20Russia%20has%20her%20Tea%20Cakes%20(add%20nuts%20again)%20,%20Southern%20American%20cooks%20make%20Butterballs%20or%20Snowballs,%20and%20the%20Germans%20and%20the%20Dutch%20make%20Pfeffernusse%20(add%20black%20pepper%20and/or%20cloves).%20Obviously%20this%20many%20wonderful%20cooks%20from%20around%20the%20world%20must%20be%20onto%20something.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdaptation%20of%20recipe%20for%20Polvorones%20de%20Canela%20from%20%22Sundays%20at%20the%20Moosewood%20Restaurant%22%20by%20the%20Moosewood%20Collective%20(NY:%20Simon%20and%20Schuster,%201990).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPolvorones%20de%20Canela%20(made%20gluten-free)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECream%20together%20butter%20and%201/2%20cup%20confectioner's%20sugar.%20Add%20in%201/2%20tsp.%20cinnamon,%20salt%20and%20vanilla.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20together%20sorghum%20flour,%20brown%20rice%20flour%20and%20xanthan%20gum.%20Fold%20into%20creamed%20mixture%20and%20mix%20well.%20Wrap%20in%20plastic%20wrap%20and%20chill%20in%20refrigerator%20for%20at%20least%20one%20hour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20350%20degrees%20F.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoll%20dough%20into%20one%20inch%20balls.%20Bake%20on%20greased%20baking%20sheet%20(I%20used%20parchment%20paper%20to%20line%20my%20cookie%20sheets%20since%20GF%20cookies%20tend%20to%20stick%20more%20easily.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20together%201%20cup%20confectioner's%20sugar%20with%201%20tsp.%20cinnamon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20cookies%2015-20%20minutes%20or%20until%20lightly%20browned.%20Don't%20overbake%20as%20this%20will%20make%20them%20desert%20dry%20(one%20batch%20escaped%20my%20baking%20attentions%20and%20was%20terribly%20dry).%20Let%20cool%20for%20a%20few%20minutes%20and%20then%20roll%20cookies%20in%20cinnamon-sugar%20mixture%20while%20still%20warm.%20Let%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20are%20terrific%20served%20warm%20with%20hot%20chocolate%20to%20dunk%20them%20in.%20They%20also%20pair%20well%20with%20coffee.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%2030%20cookies.%20Store%20in%20airtight%20containers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20haven't%20read%20%22Like%20Water%20for%20Chocolate%22%20you%20are%20in%20for%20some%20great%20entertainment.%20There%20is%20still%20time%20to%20join%20our%20online%20book%20club%20(the%20deadline%20is%20March%2026%20to%20read%20the%20book,%20cook%20something%20up%20and%20blog%20about%20it)%20at%20Cook%20the%20Books,%20where%20our%20guest%20judge%20this%20month%20is%20Ben%20of%20the%20awesome%20food%20blog%20What's%20Cooking?%20Ben%20certainly%20knows%20his%20way%20around%20Mexican%20cooking,%20having%20grown%20up%20with%20restaurateur%20parents,%20and%20he%20also%20is%20a%20fan%20of%20Esquivel's%20book,%20as%20noted%20in%20his%20review%20on%20his%20blog.%20Deb%20will%20be%20organizing%20a%20roundup%20of%20all%20the%20participants'%20posts%20about%20the%20book%20and%20their%20inspirational%20dishes,%20and%20then%20Ben%20will%20give%20us%20his%20tho
