Having just read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society for my book club, I had to find a way to make a potato peel pie for meeting. After some research, it seems this potato peel pie is as fictional as the characters in the book so I found a recipe online and tweaked it slightly and came up with the following. If possible, it is best to serve hot from the oven. Happy reading and eating!

Ингредиенты

Cost per serving $1.02 view details
  • 2 cups raw, grated potato skins (I added some of the white part to keep the texture somewhat tender), use mashed potatoes for filling
  • 1/3 cup grated onion
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 Tbs flour
  • beetroot
  • sour cream (optional)
  • chives (optional)
  • butter (optional)
  • garlic (optional)

Инструкции

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Butter a small pie plate. Mix grated potato peels with egg, onion and flour. Press the mixture into the pie plate and up the sides to form a crust. Bake crust for 20-25 minutes. While the crust is baking, cook potatoes, drain and mash. You can add your favorite mashed potato flavorings here i.e. garlic, onion, milk, butter, salt, etc. Fill crust with mashed potatoes and sprinkle with beetroot. Bake in oven at lower temperature of 375 for 10 minutes or until browned.

When you sprinkle the unbaked pie with beetroot, how is the beetroot prepared - cooked or raw?

Check out the "real" recipe on the official web site. It uses only one potato, one beet and 1 Tbs. of milk. There would have been nothing else to add to the recipe during the war.

That is a very important point. Thanks for letting us know.
I think I will try it both ways, but since I was raised post WW2, I think my modern gluttony will get the better of me.

            Hi Natali,

I really enjoyed Guernsey and was disappointed to find out there really wasn't such a dish. I did find an authentic bean pot recipe that the people of Guernsey made my filling a pot full of ingredients and putting it in a hot oven while it cooled. It sounded interesting, but I never got around to making it. Have fun with the potato peel pie and I hope you enjoy the book!

Everyone that reads the book must have the same thought. I'm about half way through and decided I had to get online and check out a potato peel pie. Your recipe sounds really good, I'm going to give it a try; I think my boyfriend would love it! Thanks for coming up with it.
