Рецепт Farm Life: My chickens are all grown up
by Strayed from the Table

My chickens started laying eggs at the start of this month. I had a proud mum moment because my girls have turned a corner in their life. With the guinea fowl gone a couple of weeks ago – to new homes not to the freezer. My chooks have relaxed as that god-awful noise has finally stopped. The girls now come up to us in the afternoons with no fear and my favourite one Mr Mohawk will even let you pick her up. She is really talkative too, they all are. It’s like they are filling the void of silence since the guineas left. At least you can’t hear it from ten meters away.

My girls have been laying in their egg boxes Roy put up for them. We have encouraged them to lay there over the past couple of weeks. Soon I will be able to go down in the morning swing the door open and they can forage all day in the creek. At the moment they are only getting afternoon play time, while I am around to check if they are laying eggs down in the creek or not.

This morning when I went down to the pen I noticed that their was dog poo on the ground. Our neighbours dogs wont cross the creek to get to our place while wild dogs will. I hope they are not spying on my girls and I hope that they can roam all day with out being attacked by wild dogs or hawks for that matter.

Mr Mohawk got her name after I saved her from a goshawk attacking her. The feathers sticking up at the back have never flattened down and it seems permanent, maybe a mark of her bravery. She is still so cute. We are getting on average 4 – 5 eggs a day from my six chickens which is not a bad effort compared to my neighbours birds who are not laying. I have three dozen sitting in my fridge and Roy doesn’t get back from PNG for another two weeks. I am going to have to do some baking over the weekend to use some of them up. I have eaten eggs for breakfast every morning too, scrambled, fried, omelets and frittatas. Soon I bet I will be eating egg sandwiches.

What is your favourite things to do with eggs?
