I had a picture hanging on the wall in my kitchen. It got knocked off the wall and broken. . . Um, back in December. And I am finally getting around to replacing it. I decided to go with something totally different. I’ve loved the wood slat signs I’ve seen all over the place, so I decided to make my own. I don’t have access to reclaimed wood or palettes, so I used paint sticks instead.
It was a fun project for me, and I love how it turned out. I whipped it up in an afternoon, and I spend half the time just trying to get photos with the sun peeking in and out of the clouds and making me change my camera settings every five minutes.

%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Large%20Paint%20Sticks%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Paint%20and%20paintbrushes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Sandpaper%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Frog%20Tape%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Pen%20or%20stylus%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Small%20banner%20(optional)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstructions:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGet%20some%20large%20paint%20sticks%20from%20the%20hardware%20store%20%E2%80%93%20the%20kind%20that%20are%20used%20to%20stir%20the%20gallon%20size%20buckets.%20I%20already%20had%20a%20bunch%20in%20my%20stash%20from%20when%20we%20painted%20our%20walls.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDetermine%20the%20size%20of%20your%20sign,%20and%20cut%20your%20paint%20sticks%20down%20to%20size.%20I%20was%20going%20to%20use%20my%20miter%20saw,%20but%20it%20was%20still%20in%20storage%20for%20the%20winter,%20so%20I%20used%20my%20scroll%20saw.%20The%20sticks%20are%20thin%20enough%20that%20you%20could%20even%20use%20a%20hand%20saw.%20I%20used%206%20sticks%20for%20this%20project.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPaint%20your%20sticks.%20I%20know%20I%20would%20be%20distressing%20mine,%20so%20I%20only%20did%20one%20coat%20of%20white%20paint,%20and%20I%20just%20painted%20the%20tops.%20After%20the%20paint%20is%20dry,%20sand%20the%20edges%20of%20the%20sticks%20if%20you%20want%20a%20more%20distressed%20look.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20it%E2%80%99s%20time%20to%20glue%20your%20paint%20sticks%20all%20together%20to%20make%20your%20sign.%20You%20can%20use%20any%20thin%20wood%20scraps,%20but%20I%20used%20the%20leftover%20pieces%20of%20paint%20sticks.%20Handy.%20I%20lined%20my%20sticks%20up,%20then%20used%20wood%20glue%20to%20attach%20a%20shorter%20piece%20across%20the%20top%20and%20bottom.%20Tip:%20After%20I%20put%20the%20wood%20glue%20down%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20scrap%20strip,%20I%20put%20a%20little%20hot%20glue%20on%20each%20end.%20Then%20I%20pressed%20the%20scrap%20onto%20the%20longer%20pieces.%20The%20hot%20glue%20holds%20everything%20firmly%20in%20place%20while%20the%20wood%20glue%20is%20drying.%20Works%20like%20a%20charm!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20your%20glue%20is%20dry,%20attach%20your%20design%20to%20the%20front%20of%20the%20sign.%20Tape%20it%20in%20place%20with%20Frog%20Tape.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETake%20a%20pen%20or%20stylus%20and%20carefully%20trace%20the%20edges%20of%20the%20letters%20(or%20shapes%20if%20you%20have%20those).%20Press%20firmly-%20you%20want%20to%20leave%20an%20indentation%20in%20the%20wood.%20If%20I%20had%20it%20to%20do%20over,%20I%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20use%20a%20font%20any%20thinner%20than%20the%20one%20I%20used%20to%20spell%20%E2%80%9CJoy%E2%80%9D.%20Those%20thin%20fonts%20were%20hard%20to%20paint!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20is%20really%20hard%20to%20see,%20but%20if%20you%20look%20close,%20you%20can%20see%20the%20little%20marks%20that%20the%20pen%20left.%20In%20real%20life%20it%20is%20much%20easier%20to%20see,%20I%20promise.%20Just%20use%20fine%20tipped%20paintbrushes%20top%20paint%20the%20words,%20using%20the%20indentations%20as%20a%20guide.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20my%20words%20dried,%20I%20sanded%20my%20sign%20to%20make%20it%20look%20a%20little%20more%20rustic.%20But%20with%20the%20thin%20fonts%20that%20I%20used,%20it%20looked%20kinda%20crappy.%20So%20I%20had%20to%20go%20back%20and%20add%20paint.%20That%20was%20a%20pain%20in%20the%20bum.%20So%20don%E2%80%99t%20do%20what%20I%20did.%20Use%20larger%20fonts!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20did%20look%20good%20in%20the%20end%20though.%20And%20don%E2%80%99t%20worry%20if%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20look%20perfect.%20I%20think%20that%20adds%20charm,%20and%20makes%20it%20actually%20look%20unique%20and%20handmade!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20added%20a%20little%20fabric%20banner%20to%20the%20corner%20of%20mine.%20I%20followed%20this%20no-sew%20banner%20tutorial,%20except%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20attach%20my%20fabric%20to%20canvas,%20so%20it%20was%20even%20easier.%20You%20can%20use%20paper,%20or%20pom%20poms,%20or%20flowers%20instead,%20whatever%20you%20like!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20all%20you%20have%20to%20do%20is%20add%20a%20picture%20hanger%20to%20the%20back%20and%20hang%20it%20on%20the%20wall!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20there%20you%20have%20it.%20A%20custom%20wood%20slat%20sign%20that%20you%20can%20proudly%20display%20in%20your%20home!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELinking%20up%20with:%20The%20Happy%20Scraps,%204%20You%20With%20Love,%20Artsy%20Fartsy%20Mama,%20Not%20Just%20a%20Housewife,%20Crafting%20in%20the%20Rain,%20My%20Repurposed%20Life,%20Design,%20Dining,%20and%20Diapers,%20Flamingo%20Toes,%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
